Problems With The Public School System
By Peter Johnson
When we commit our children to the public school system, we should feel satisfied that they are
receiving 'sound education'. But, are we really
getting our money's worth? Most importantly, are the children benefiting from this kind of a
learning procedure? There are many questions which we are left unanswered.
Socialization is highlighted as one of the distinct advantages of Public schools. This is the
place where the child picks up fundamental social skills that help him/her cope on a daily basis. In reality, a regular school-going child
can interact only with his peers. He may bully younger children or fear older ones- you will rarely find the truth. He does not know how to
behave and interact with an adult. This is because in the school environment
he interacts only with his peers. A homeschooling environment
brings in a more natural social environment.
A regular school going child cannot read literature. He cannot keep silent or think in depth
about any one thing. The artificial business forced upon him by the school forbids quiet contemplation. Rowdy and destructive behaviour, as
seen among peers, is more noticeable in school-goers. Bullying is a continuing problem in the public school system, and is often
unbeknownst to parents due to the psychological damage it can inflict upon children who face it.
There is little long-standing knowledge among regular school goers because the majority of
material is learnt solely for the exam. There is no relationship between the facts and life. The child may know a lot, but understands very
little. This is where the homeschoolers get the advantage over regular school goers. Ultimately, homeschoolers emerge more rounded and
able
to face the outside world.
